At the Ronald McDonald House, they provide training and intake work before you start actually volunteering. First, you fill out and application and start the background check. Next, they conduct an interview and give a tour of the home. Video trainings and information including the goals and guidelines of the organization are shared. Last, you go through three shadow shifts with a more experienced volunteer to learn the process and get more familiar with where things are located in the building. During your time as a volunteer, they post refreshers or events to emphasize these trainings, such as scavenger hunts and weekly trivia. These learning opportunities support volunteers in fulfilling the organizations mission.
Outside of the house, other tasks include restocking and cleaning the family lounge or using the Care Cart. A checklist is given to ensure that volunteers are aware of the proper procedures. Communication is emphasized between staff members, the volunteer coordinator plans where volunteers will be spending their shifts, staff members ask for donations or add to the grocery lists. Emergency evacuation and procedures follow the hospitals guidelines and safety information is provided in the volunteer packet. All of this information is available in the volunteer binders should a volunteer have a question. Learning is used to build positive relationships and promote accessibility to resources throughout the organization.
